In 1989 the Society undertook a county wide survey to record all legible gravestone inscriptions for Co. Sligo. The findings of this survey were computerised.
These inscriptions can be very useful, particularly the Church of Ireland ones. However, it should be kept in mind that many people did not erect gravestones and those surviving today probably represents as low as 1% of the population.
The recording of inscriptions varies from county to county and is also work that is ongoing in many places.
