A special evening celebrating Sligo history
Posted on: June 15, 2017
The Way We Were took place in the Hawks Well Theatre on Wednesday 14 June. It was the fourth year of this popular event. This year’s theme involved Sligo’s people and way of life in Sligo town in the 18th and 19th centuries and the importance of the harbour for trade, transport and emigration
(l-R) John McTernan, Simone Hickey & John Carton
The first speaker Simone Hickey gave us an insight into the Sligo men who fought and died in World War 1. Sligo’s current Harbour Master, John Carton recalled how Sligo port developed, how it was an important trading port up until the middle of the 20th century and the type of vessels which departed from Sligo. John McTernan gave a visitors account of Sligo in the 1700s. He also showed us images of Sligo and how buildings of historical importance changed their uses through the years and the reliance on Sligo’s port in the past.
It was wonderful to hear these stories of Sligo’s heritage.
Thank you to all who visited our stand
